Frame Drums
|
Frame drums are among the oldest instruments in the percussion family. Evidence of the frame drum has been observed in the carvings and paintings of ancient cultures. The basic design is an instrument with a circular shell approximately two to four inches in depth. The diameter of the drums generally ranges from six to twenty-two inches. The drumhead consists of an animal, fish or reptile skin that is stretched across one side of the drum. Some instruments have skin stretched across both sides of the drum and loose grains or other small materials placed inside. This adds a myriad of sound possibilities to the drum. In many cultures, women were the exclusive artists of frame drum performance.
